No sound on your laptop or computer can be an extremely frustrating problem. Your sound has most likely been working properly since you bought your computer, and then one day pooof – the sound stops working. In this article we are going to look at several possible causes of no sound and their corresponding solutions.
More often than not, no sound on your laptop or computer can be caused by carelessness. I hate to state the obvious, but the first step is to check your speakers to ensure they are hooked up correctly. Sometimes, people accidentally plug the speaker jack into the Line-in Jack of the sound card. Follow the cords of your speakers to your computer and make sure they are plugged into the right Jack. Use your computer’s manual if you need a diagram. Also make sure your speaker’s power button is turned on, they are plugged into a working outlet, and the mute button is not turned on. These are often overlooked, but can be the cause of no sound on your laptop.
Your next step is to check to make sure your speakers are not broken. This is the last step you will need to perform before troubleshooting your system. You can check to see if your speakers are the problem by plugging in a pair of headphones. If the headphones work and you can hear sound, chances are the speakers were the problem.
Now it’s time to look at possible no sound problems related to your laptop or computer. Check the volume mixer in the system tray and make sure all the knobs are turned up and none of the mute buttons are turned on. If you are using a media player to test your sound, make sure its volume control is turned up as well. Otherwise, you won’t be able to hear any sound. Also try testing the functionality of your sound with a couple different applications. If a particular application is causing the problem, you may need to reinstall it.
Still, if there is no sound on your laptop or computer, then most likely you will need to reinstall your audio driver. Go to your control panel, and look to see if there are any audio devices listed. If there are not, or if you see an exclamation mark, then you will need to use driver software such as Driver Robot to find a compatible driver for your computer.
Updating your drivers usually fixes the notorious “no sound” problem, but if for some reason the problem persists, you can take your laptop to your local computer repair shop and they will fix it for you.
