Are Tablets the New Netbooks?

netbooks, tablets, netbook reviews

Tablets like the Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab are taking the mobile computing world in a storm. Due to their highly mobile nature and extensive hardware, they are quickly becoming a replacement for a market netbooks had sought to take over. While the netbook is much more compact compared to its bulkier laptop cousin, tablets are quickly becoming the better option from a performance standpoint.

Hardware

You can purchase netbooks with high-performance hardware, yet this can oftentimes rival tablets in price. Hardware may boost performance of your netbook in some regards, but the tablet will still be faster. Hardware will always be a differentiating feature among tablets and netbooks, yet it will ultimately come down to how the product performs in the end. A netbook may have better hardware, yet the operating system may be the hindering factor in terms of performance.

Performance

From a performance standpoint, while netbooks may be able to run more complex applications than tablets, they still suffer from the constraints of the operating system. As most netbooks run the Windows operating system, there are countless processes running in the background. The end result of this is less performance to apply toward the applications you actually want to use.

Tablets run on much more mobile operating systems that give users more flexibility in the applications they run. While the operating system may be more restrictive in terms of multitasking, there are fewer processes bogging down tablets’ performance. Netbooks offer some flexibility that tablets cannot match when it comes to the variety of software and customization options.

Mobility

Tablets have become the epitome of mobility in the world of computing. They are the size of a small paper notepad and are instantly accessible at any moment. Netbooks, on the other hand, must boot up each time you need to use them. The Apple iPad weighs just over one pound, whereas most netbooks are at least three pounds, which can make them slightly more unwieldy on the go.

Pricing

For the moment, netbooks still remain the more economical option. These can get as low as $200 in price, which is half the price of standard tablets presently. However, as tablets begin to become more common and the manufacturing price drops, these are certain to match netbooks within the next few years.

The big selling point for tablets is the app stores. With netbooks, you won’t find such luxury as $1 software in large quantities. Tablets, on the other hand, have access to thousands of applications that fill a wide range of needs for a low price. Software for netbooks on the other hand can get quite expensive.

There is a reason that Dell recently announced its plans to drop its line of netbooks. Tablets are the solution to the modern consumer’s needs. They’re highly mobile and easy to use, making them the ideal solution for both new and intermediate users in today’s business world. Our netbook reviews will provide some insight on the versatility of these devices, but you should also consider tablets as they are proving to be the better option.
